To His Majesty's Theatre, dahling, the other night to catch Grassic Gibbon, a new play penned by veteran journalist and author Jack Webster. It captures the short life of one of Scotland's greatest writers, J Leslie Mitchell aka Lewis Grassic Gibbon, of A Scots Quair fame and his early struggle for recognition in the literary world.
Thoroughly entertaining, evening if the Billy Bunteresque guy sitting next to me didn't think so, judging by his occassional bouts of snoring.
In his teens Grassic Gibbon was a journalist with The Aberdeen Journal(pre P and J days)and the Scottish Farmer in Glasgow. But I couldn't make up my mind if it was Grassic Gibbon or Jack Webster speaking when actor Michael McKenzie stated: "A journalist puts his talent in to his work. And his genius in to his expenses."
And 80 odd years later I doubt that has changed much.
Jack Webster appeared on stage at the end of the production and in an emotional thank you, said he hoped Grassic Gibbon would tour smaller theatres throughout Scotland. Worth looking out for even if you are not a fan of Sunset Song which I intend re-reading. And if I get stuck on the Doric language this time, I ken a quine who can spik like a richt teuchter and can decipher for me.
